Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be LGBTQIA+?

No, but you do need to be accepting and supportive of all genders, sexualities, identities, and ages.

Will I have to audition?

Nope! Come to a rehearsal and join in to find out which section suits you best. You can always change your mind later.

Do I need to be able to read music?

It’s not essential. We have audio learning tracks available for you to learn the songs by ear if that works better for you.

But I can’t sing!

You might be able to sing better than you think. All you need is enthusiasm for singing. Previous choral experience is not expected.

What do you expect from members?

Enthusiasm, commitment, respect and support for other members, turning up on time, and staying up to date with fees. For more details, see our Code of Conduct.

Where and when do you rehearse?

Tuesdays 7.30pm (sharp) – 9.30pm. (See the calendar)

Church of the Trinity, Clarence Park, just south of Goodwood. There’s plenty of parking onsite and a bus stop at the door.

How many performances do you do each year?

The performance schedule includes one or two major concerts, along with several smaller gigs and performances for family and friends. Singing at performances is not compulsory.

How much does it cost?

Nothing for the first 3 rehearsals. Then, if you think Qwire is for you, there is a fee per semester (see our Contact page). You can arrange to pay in installments.

What typically happens at a rehearsal?

It’s important to be on time. We have warm up exercises, which can be quite fun, and then we work through old and new material for our next performance. A 15-minute coffee/tea break and chat is called midway, and a small donation (gold coin) for the supplies is appreciated. Then it’s back to singing. Occasionally there is a lot of playful silliness. Sometimes we break into sectional groups.

Our Journey So Far

1996-2000 – A group known as the S.A Gay and Lesbian Choir started around February 1996. They rehearsed in the Beans Bar, the Mars Bar and the Bowden-Brompton Community Centre, having several directors over the years the group dissolved around 2000.

2001 The choir, as it’s currently known, was formed in 2001. ‘Red’ came along from Canberra G&L Choir and began with a new group of singers and gave the group its unusual and idiosyncratic spelling of the word Choir; ‘Qwire’.

2002-2010 – Directors changed over the years, and rehearsal venues shifted several times. Performances at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, The Museum and Carclew (candelight vigil). and an attendance of a small group at the Gay Olympics in Sydney in 2002.

Further performances at the Mayfair Theatre the Folk Club and participation in the rally at Parliament House and Gay Pride March & candlelight vigil in 2003/4.

Qwire also performed at Pyjama Party, Feast Fundraiser, Candlelight Vigil and participation in the Gay Pride March for 2007 through 2010.

2011 – New directors and accompanists again, and we adopted the “Q” logo – a musical themed design incorporating Bass and Treble clefs.

2012 – As part of IDAHO, the Qwire was asked to sing at Flinders University in conjunction with the gender equality group ALLY (queer space). We performed at Elders’ Big Day Out (COTA – Council of the Aging). And we were invited to perform at Picnic in the Park and World AIDS Day services.

A Christmas concert was held in conjunction with the Mitcham City Brass Band and the Retune Choir.

2013 – Many of our members went to Tasmania to join the Festival of Voices. We performed two movie themed shows in conjunction with the Mitcham City Brass Band. We appeared at the opening to the “Gay Times Are Here Again”, an exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1973 Adelaide Gay Pride Week. Our end of year concert was at Elder Hall as part of the Feast Festival.

2014-2019 – Many more performances and activities, Qwire produced a CD of songs. Available for sale at current performances.

2020-2022 – A quieter time during Covid, Qwire continued to meet and sing as a group.

2022-current – Regrowing our membership and performing for family and friends. Social activities are one of the ways we keep ourselves motivated!
